Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the difference between hardwood and softwood?

Wood varies in hardness. Although both can be used, there is a major difference in how they burn. Hardwood includes maple, oak, ash, walnut, locust (honey or black), cherry, peach, apple, hickory, and beech while softwood includes conifer, pine, cedar, hemlock, poplar, spruce, and fir. Generally, hardwood will burn for longer periods of time. Hardwood will also create hotter, smoldering coals. Softwood is ideal for short, hot fires. We usually recommend mixed hardwood because it burns longer and cleaner with less creosote buildup in the chimney.

2. What is a "cord" of firewood?

A cord of firewood is the standard, legally defined measurement of firewood. It is defined as 128 cubic feet of closely stacked wood that is 8 feet long x 4 feet wide x 4 feet high. Likewise, a half cord of wood would be 64 cubic feet, or a stack that measures 4 feet long x 4 feet wide x 4 feet high.

3. Where are you located?

Toma Toma Firewood is situated in the Evergreen State, Washington. We have locations in Lynnwood, Edmonds, and Whidbey Island. Our firewood bundles can also be found in select 7-Eleven® convenience stores.

4. What is the best wood for cooking?

All fruit woods are great companions to grilled foods. I highly recommend applewood because of its good coaling properties and aromatic, sweet fragrance. It perfectly complements poultry, pork, and beef.
